No, not playing with your food. :D This is a common German phrase, I dunno if it also works in English. But it has a playful touch, similar to playing tag with friends. You pit your strength against your counterpart.

It's the exact same phrase in English, but it doesn't always have a playful aspect. It definitely implies toying with someone, though.
