I don&;t see how anyone would even want to amass that many events! I dislike the clutter so I get rid of them usually soon after I see them.
This! How do you keep track of which ones are new? If you get new alerts in the same category of your saved ones, it moves them to the top of the list...personally I think if you can still keep track of which are new and which you have saved, maybe you don't need to keep them saved after all ._.

This definitely seems like a good idea. The events bar gets so cluttered really fast.

The only events I keep for an extended period of time are smails and pings with commission forms anyway. And then only for maximum a month or so if it drags out.

Preface: I've come to terms as to why this is needed, however I wish it was said "sorry! we need to freed the servers" rather than "you shouldn't use ___ to store information". Because I think it makes sense to store at least some Subeta information within Subeta. Also, I'm not crazy about the assumption that I'm doing something wrong. This is almost shaming every user who used events as a way of organization.

I also find it rather curious that, because most of people dislike the clutter and see no purpose to it, they seem to presume anyone doing it differently is obviously doing a pointless activity. Why would we do such a meaningless thing?! We're clearly crazy!!

Let's shame those people some more.

Well, there was a user a couple years back that was having the worst time trying to play the site and do things without the most horrendous lag and errors.(...)Turns out that she had hundreds of events saved on her sidebar.

*thousands of events, most likely.

Idk, I used to play for years with hundreds of events, and I'd honestly only start experiencing lag when it neared 1000. I only remember hitting 1000 once, and yes, by then things lagged considerably. Sure, some computers are older and such things, but mine is very far from new too, haha.

This! How do you keep track of which ones are new? If you get new alerts in the same category of your saved ones, it moves them to the top of the list...

It's actually rather simple. Since I'm on pretty much everyday, I can remember the older events just by looking at them, because there was a reason I kept them, after all. Maybe it was a # deadlines ping, maybe it was a slot I claimed, maybe it was a denial I got, maybe it was the last ping from someone who isn't playing anymore. But if I forget, I can just hover over them for the date.

personally I think if you can still keep track of which are new and which you have saved, maybe you don&;t need to keep them saved after all ._.

I actually don't memorize my events (I remember things when I see them, it's different), but even if I could memorize them, for this to be true, I'd have to memorize the links they contain as well. I haven't quite yet gotten to that point, haha.

Bottom line: if keeping many pings, like joining many groups, is an issue, maybe it'd be worth looking at why people do it, instead of presuming they're dumb and do it because they enjoy stressing the system.

Idk I still agree that there are way better ways to organize things than keeping events forever. I don't think anyone is trying to stress the system just that they're using a poor method of organization.

I do agree with you that CW denial reasons should be available on-site somewhere (that's useful even for future reference, trying to figure out what you're continually doing wrong, etc. if you happen to be the artist)

But considering there's the notepad widget you can use for links and things (and even in a smaller space than the event takes up) I really don't think it's necessary to hoard the events themselves

I think this is a good idea. I keep events sometimes to remind me of things, and I kept some of my pet spotlight wins for a bit, or "your friend __ has given you the pet ___!" just to make me smile. But if something is so important, keep it somewhere else. Temporary storage is ok, and I get why people do it, but... Maybe it's just me being anti-social but I can't see how it's impossible to keep track of important things somewhere else.

It's like I get it, but if you're really keeping an event for MONTHS... just write it down.

Yeah, I'm not actually annoyed by the fact in itself, I started getting annoyed by the way it has been argued. People who do things differently don't quite seem to grasp the fact that there was a reasonable train of thought behind keeping some pings.

This is certainly less than ideal for organization, indeed, but we do lack options, and there's certain Subeta information that I wish would remain on site, yes. Also, Subeta is a particularly hard site to navigate; I catch myself googling links more often than not, haha. So I don't blame people keeping events because of that, too.

As a side note, if I recall correctly, this same argument was used once about smails, and the new fixed width layout did not have room for a notepad as well. These are issues to be argued later, of course, but I'm not crazy about the precedent a forced ping clearing sets.

[edit] It's not impossible to do things somewhere else, by no means. It's just annoying when we have to keep copying some stuff that we (imo) shouldn't have to. Also, a good chunk of my events cycle, just many won't cycle within a month or two.

I don't think people are dumb, I just think that they are using events in a way that we didn't anticipate, and a way that they aren't meant to be used. The system is there to show you that something has happened - nothing more.

If you tell me the things you wish you had available elsewhere (I'm working on the CW information being readily available) then I'm happy to try and make places where that information is available, just the events aren't it :).

Yeah, I can see it. Thanks for that! In fact, I deleted most of my events a few days ago because of the layout glitch ( suggested trying that, so I'm down to only 80 at this second), but I have no problems checking my long-standing events and seeing what sort of information I wanted to keep from them.

I'll check some older screenies, but right now I can see I have kept some pings to "thank you" threads to remember friends' birthdays dates (admittedly could do it elsewhere, but if they have the cake available, why not give us an alert or list it somewhere?) and the event I might miss the most, my welcoming one (haha). As a newbie, I kept it because it linked to a FAQ I didn't know how to find otherwise, and as an older player I kept it because it shows me the hour I joined. I think it would be nice to have that information on the User Dashboard, since you can only pick your LB at that exact hour. People are always confused by the "X years 11 months 4 weeks" thing!

Another class of events I think are very important are warnings. I really think the number on the User Dashboard should link to a subpage that would tell you the reason (ex. "discussing frozen users") and the date the warning was issued. Would avoid us opening tickets just to know whether we can clear them already, only to have tell us it's not time yet!

The events aren't a way I would organize, so this doesn't affect me, but I completely understand why people do it. At work, whenever I get an email, I like to organize the information to the correct place immediately, and keep my inbox to being completely empty of emails. (I have a little subfolder called "working on" so I don't have to keep it in my inbox.)

Many of my coworkers, though, keep everything in their inbox until they're 100% done with whatever the topic is. A lot of them have hundreds or thousands of emails. I look at what they do, and I know I would never keep track of anything if I did it their way, but they also don't understand how my organizational style works for me. I figure this whole event thing is more or less the same thing. Just different ways of understanding the information and compartmentalizing it in a way that works for you.

I don't have anything to contribute over how best to organize the information taken from events, but I can understand both sides.

Turns out in the site width mix up I accidentally deleted all the events that really mattered that I wanted to screenshot/bookmark anyway sigh However,

A couple additional ideas for categories that would be nice to see being kept elsewhere on site:

Account accomplishments Things like pet spotlights, costume contest wins etc I have kept my 6th place morostide costume contest win all this time because it is something I'm proud of and is not easily found. Now and then I like to go back and look at the entries ^_^ This could be a tab in the dashboard or a new page in the personal drop down menu or linked from our trophy case widget on our profiles

Game alerts This is likely just be me being lazy I guess, but I like to make alerts for games like random, the crypts, blackout etc and then leave them so I don't have to press the remind me button again. It's like a menu of dailies right there in my alerts. The only time I would make a new alert is if I accidentally deleted one, or my saved events knocked my game links down on the page and I wanted them back at the top. Maybe we could have a customizable favorite games widget to stick in the sidebar also. (I can only fit so many in my bookmarks on the other side!)

Also, out of paranoia, I kept all the dance invites from the masquerade that I wasn't able to accept before the event ended. I heard that they will be able to be accepted next time but I'm just wondering if that is true or not. (Not that it matters I suppose since they are definitely old and will be deleted today lol)

This may be a teensy bit off subject, but I want to put in my two cents regarding the notepad as an organizational tool.

I use my notepad to keep track of every one of my pets' career goals. Career track, time/level/strength/intelligence to promotion, dates, titles, all that fun stuff. I really have to compact it to make it look clean, but the list is still pretty long, and the notepad is really narrow, and we're only allowed one.

I tried adding another notepad the other day so that I could keep links in there that I didn't want to bookmark, since bookmarks take up so much space (the places I only visit once a day, like the garden or the Hustler), but again, there is only one notepad allowed, and I don't like the idea of having to scroll waaay dooown into the grey area in order to find my links, nor do I want to scroll down to see job info when I have it set up to be parallel with the stats screen at the gym.

There are plenty of other things I'd like to keep track of on this site as well. Certain things I store offline, but for me that's very unreliable, so I often keep backups on other websites. Other things I keep in a paper notebook. I have dozens of pages dedicated to the strengths and weaknesses of various coliseum opponents, ingredient lists for Scrolls/Genetech Lab Items/Alchove Items, a calendar of events/ where I stand in various achievements, multitudes of goals that I have for all of my pets, etc.

I'd really like it if there were a full-page, private "notepad" that I could use to write stuff down in. The sidebar widget is nice, don't get me wrong. And I can see shooting this idea down if it is suspected of potentially causing lag, so... maybe a character limit? A full page would still be nice though.

One thing you could do instead is use the notepad widget to serve as your menu of dailies. It accepts BBCode so you can organize it nicely into easy-to-read clickable links.

Ah I suppose I could add that to the list, I keep my seasonal BBcode for the forums on there already.

How long do the notifications sit before their deleted? Because I work long days, when I log in it says I have like 12 notifications, when I click the event box, there's not anything there.I would at least like them to stay for 24 hrs.Give me a chance to read them.

As soon as I get an event and go to look at it, it's gone. So I have no idea what the notification was for. Don't know if this is normal, but it's annoying. No idea what my MM gave me as I don't even get to read the notification.

It's not normal, events are buggy/not showing up right now for a lot of people. According to the threads on the Problems and Bugs forum, staff is aware of the problem and they're looking into it.

EDIT: Events aren't showing up and yet, I pinged people. Wow, I'm stupid. XD Or force of habit is just that strong.
