Wow! Pucefancy has read a lot of books! They may qualify for the Most Books Read High Score List!
Erm, this gets said to my most illiterate of pets and she is not anywhere NEAR the MBR High Scores, not even close. Maybe this has an absolute number that's the threshold before it is triggered and hasn't changed in years? I think that this could be given a higher number, or given a percentage of known books of Subeta before it triggers.
or at least link it to the right HST
It's not a big deal but:
My shop is called "AΩ" but whenever I get an event for it, it shows up as "A?". Can the events be updated to include the symbols if we're allowed to put them into our shop names?
It's Wednesday so I'm trying to do another update spree. I'm up to post 375 To do:
Added:
Fixed:
Removed: 5. Bring back the 'you have this item' when browsing a wishlist
I'm not going to add the "remove forum groups from inactive users" thing to the list because there is a huge potential of upsetting people and it's probably something worth discussing with other users first.
And why would a block list need so many features? It are the people you chose to not want to see or the people who chose they don't want you to see them. It seems like extra work with no real benefit.
The first post seems to have reached a limit the content wasn't displaying anymore until I took out a few lines.
if someone has a fabulous idea how to work around this, please let me know. The fixed things already got moved to a post of their own.

I think you misunderstood.I meant check mark and mass remove ourselves from groups we no longer want to be in.So we wouldn't have to click to remove one at a time.
and I get that people might get upset over groups being deleted from frozen or inactive users. But what happens when those groups just sit for 5 years or more with no activity, and a lot of those still active users remove themselves. And it just collects dust. Will this create some issues down the road?
And as for the block list, then that leaves that big question many users have asked for a long time. And I think we know what it is.So no need to mention it here.Either ways thanks for the replies.Sorry for responding late.I've been barely on due to a really bad sinus infection.
Like a good neighbor, stay over there!

Do you have a recommendation for what would be a better book total to check for? I think the code is from when there were a lot less book items in existence, so it's reasonable to update it to a larger number.
I agree, and yeah it will have to wait until more basic wardrobe functionality is fixed up first. The "clear all" button is actually glitched besides that issue so it's something to fix.

Bring back the &;you have this item&; when browsing a wishlist
I know it was a very useful feature and would be really great to have, but it isn't feasible. This is not up for debate, sorry. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but people seem hopeful for it so I think it's better to just communicate it clearly that it's not going to happen. :(
reasoning and faq
The decision is made, but I thought some might appreciate an explanation so I took the time to type this up.
In an ideal world, we would have this feature, but in reality the strain it puts on the servers is impractical. For example, if your friend has 500 items on their wishlist, just visiting their wishlist would cause an account search to be done 500 times! That would take a very long time, and would put a lot of strain on our servers.
Why is it that wishlist search (like in shops and galleries) can still work then? A wishlist search only checks if the item is on your wishlist. Even if your wishlist is large, our servers only need to search for the item in one place. But an account search has to check multiple places: your inventory, your vault (which can have thousands of different items), your pet treasures, your shops and galleries.... It isn't just a single database search, but many searches need to be done to search the whole account. So even account-searching for a single item is expensive (in terms of computing time/power). Account-searching for hundreds of items at a time is just too much.
Can't Subeta bring the feature back now that we have better servers? Nope. The servers have improved and a lot of lag has been eliminated. But the problem with the "you have this item" feature wasn't that we had broken servers, it's that the feature is inherently inefficient. Think about it this way: a wishlist page that account-searches 500 items should be 500 times laggier than the account-search feature itself (which only searches one item). No matter how efficient we make this, it won't change the fact that it's still doing a very large amount of work, more than we can dedicate to this page. We do not have unlimited computing resources, so we have to pick and choose which features to have and this one just requires too much of those resources to be feasible.
Frustrations like this are my motivation for wanting to begin classes in coding!
I'm really disappointed to hear all of this, and even more disappointed to hear what is essentially "Just let it go. We're not even looking for a potential workaround or something that could serve as a comparable substitute."
I understand the reasoning, I really do. But every time I take a long break from this game, this is seriously The ONE thing I wish to see when I come back (maybe not in its previous form since it was a huge server strain, but something comparable). A sizeable chunk of the joy I derive from playing this game comes from gifting users and trading items for wishlist. So even though we've been told no repeatedly, this will continue to be something that I hope for in some way, shape, or form.
I posted this a while ago, but do not know how viable it is from a coding perspective because I did not get any replies from someone who would know. Even if its not though, I'll still be dreaming, wishing, and hoping. Holidays are really just not the same without it.
SPOILER (click to toggle)
I apologize in advance that I&;m not actually sure how viable this is from a coding perspective, but even if it&;s not, it may give one of the coders some inspiration for a solution that does work! Here goes:</p>
<p>Combine the existing Queuing system with a cross between "wishlist search" feature (user shops) and "account search". The way this could hopefully be set up is to have a wishlist search button inside of each user&;s wishlist. If you pressed the button to be shown only items you own from that wishlist, the request would be entered into the Queuing system. Your request might take a few minutes depending on where you are in the queue and how large the user&;s wishlist is. You would be notified and provided a link when it finished. Maybe to cut down further on inquiries, all of the permanent collections could be omitted completely (aka only show you owned giftable items). If necessary this feature could probably even be limited to one request every few minutes (especially during times like Luminaire when a larger amount of people would be trying to use it at once).</p>
<p>Why I think this might work:</p>
<p>Before the latest server move I noticed that there were certain sets of activities that would reliably trigger a 504, lag, white pages, or some combination thereof. One of these activities was moving large quantities of items (100+) between two shops. Since we do not have our other shops in the dropdown on the Edit Shop page, this normally involves moving the items to your inventory first and then quickstocking to the other shop. However, I noticed that there seemed to be one very simple way to bypass the errors and accompanying lag to make them almost never happen. This was to move the items from shop to vault first, and then from vault to the desired shop. I believe the reason this worked was the Queuing system that is in place within vaults, which seems to balance the server load over time rather than trying to force it through all at once. If the issue with this wishlist feature in the past was the sudden huge request(s), perhaps the Queuing system could help funnel it through in more manageable amounts.
how many books it triggers on should be dependent on why the message is there. Also it depends on how many different wordings you wish to use depending on how many books the pet has read (if you even want to get that sophisticated).
If it's just an advert to get folks to realize that there's a whole world of books, then there are twenty pages of r1-99 ones, 25% of the total books, so 500 of them shown in Subetalodge. This is how many books you could get if you were just restocking along/questing/reading books to your pet but not really into it yet.
If it's meant to be a genuine compliment but not be an indication that you're anywhere near the HS Table, then it should IMO be around half of the total of books, around 1100. Many of the books gotten to get that high involve playing the site for a while somehow, or purchasing them from users who have done so.
If it is meant to be taken literally, then IMO a pet should be within the top 100 of the HS table even though only the top 20 will show. This way it will be a real clue as to just how smart your pet is relative to everyone else's. This way someone could guess whether or not they really wanna spend the tens of millions of sP/CSC equivalents. My wild guess from talking to folks with readerpets is that this will be a number close to 1700.
I understand, but please realize that we have looked for workarounds. At some point, we have to just be honest about how we can't do it right now. It has to do with our limited resources. If Subeta magically comes into a large sum of money, and then we can buy a lot more machines and processing power, yeah it'll be something we can consider bringing back. But we don't have that right now.
A queueing system doesn't reduce the amount of work the machines have to do. It just spreads out when the machine has to do it. But it's still the same amount of extra work, which can be a TON of work because there are people whose wishlists have thousands of items and there's people whose vaults have tens of thousands or more... not to mention shops, galleries, etc.
One compromise maybe would be a "reverse wishlist search" for shops. That is, you know how you can go to a shop and there's a wishlist search button in the shop, to only show items on your wishlist? We could feasibly make a button where you show all the items in your shop that are on someone else's wishlist, since it's essentially the same thing. But it sounds like this wouldn't be much of a compromise, because it was mentioned a lot about how it helped find forgotten items in your vault, etc...
I understand the important role of gifting on this website. But I guess part of it, for now, will be having to look through wishlists and find gifts the old-fashioned way.
Edit- By the way, if you wanna ask more in-depth coding questions and stuff like that, please head over to my tumblr. I'd like if I could keep it there since it's easier to find stuff there than on the forums.
The intention is mainly to make readers aware that the high score tables exist. So like, if somebody has read a couple hundred books to their pets, we want to have a message on the page that basically means "You seem to like reading stuff to your pets, did you know there's a high score table you can work towards for doing that?" That's also partly why it's a bit of a low number right now.
Maybe we could just change the wording on that message so it's clearer that it's just saying "here's a thing you could have as a goal" instead of "your pet qualifies for this". What do you think?

Please please add a count to the gifts page (Total gifts - overall and total month by month and year)?
I really appreciate the in-depth response and the honesty. It still brings up a bunch of "what if" questions in my mind, but I'm going to leave them there because to be perfectly honest, I actually love the idea of the compromise that you suggested. The old system had the very unfortunate problem of not being able to filter out things that were in permanent collections. If it was searching only my shop, I could ensure that it was only seeking things that I planned on getting rid of anyway. In a lot of ways it could be better than the old system. I can't speak for anyone else, but this would certainly satisfy my needs and I'd no longer feel the need to brainstorm potential solutions.
I'm not really someone who uses their vault for that kind of storage though (since we're theoretically not supposed to be hoarding anymore), so the issue of forgotten items wouldn't likely apply to me. However, if it did, I'd probably just move everything to a gallery or shop during the holidays for the sake of taking advantage of the compromise - it would still be a lot less effort than manually clicking account search on everything on their wishlist. It has been long enough that any potential compromise sounds a heck of a lot better than what we've got currently.
Finally, thank you for the link to your tumblr. I plan on starting some basic programming classes in the fall, so if anything sparks an in-depth question I'll be sure to take advantage of that line of communication!
The way your have phrased this makes me want to make Suggestion worthy stuff instead of giving you a number. Let me know if you think I should start a topic separate from this. If the things below are Suggestion worthy then my answer is that Subeta should give this non-HS-Table reply upon reading the very first book.
The idea behind High Score tables is more general than just reading. The Tutorial came into existence long after I joined Subeta. Does it cover High Scores? If it is not intended to swamp the new user with absolutely everyting about the site, then it is reasonably omitted from the Tutorial.
There are Achievements for doing things including reading. When I was new I remember that getting them here in Subeta was a surprise. This surprise was much like getting Secret Avatars on another (more inferior) virtual petsite. So my idea would be to change the text of the 'you have read ten books' or 'you have read 25 books' Achievement so that it becomes apparent that there's a HS Table for this.
More specifically, a Champion Scroll requires 3AP to cast and it's super effective for even untrained pets to fight Easy challengers, so I'd put in a special tier for 48 books. This would alert the new user that not only is it a thing for a HS table, it's also useful to have INT. It takes 80 books/5AP to even make a Champion Scroll at the Secluded Shrine, so maybe the scroll could even be made the Achievement Prize
Hmm... Is there a chance for an improved pet display sCode?
petname
The current one is a bit... sad and lacking.
Agna
It just displays a headshot of the pet. No displayed petname and it's not even clickable if you want to see the pet's profile.
I think it'd be better to have a smaller image of the pet (75x75), petname right below it, and both the image and the petname are clickable and lead to the pet's profile.
Alternatively... make a petID=123456 display code like the one I've listed above and keep the pet=PETNAME one looking more like the leashed pet code? With a round headshot, petname below.
[sub]I am totally not suggesting this to avoid using ~80 pet buttons to sort and organize my pets into groups on my profile, what are you talking about.[/sub]
Yup! I'm working on it as part of my filter rewrite! Which is sooo close to being done too. (Stay tuned...)
My plan for the improved code is for it to show a headshot as well as PetName the Gender-Icon Color Species :D And the whole thing will link to the pet's profile of course!
I don't know if it's necessary to have an sCode that works with pet ID... I guess I could make one similar to the userid one, but that will come after the normal pet one is fixed up.

❤ ❤ ❤ Aaaaa, that's awesome!
The only reason I suggested two possible codes is because some petnames are still a little funky when it comes to displaying the pet page by petname. My pet Aza'zel is a great example. Go by ID, everything displays fine. Go by the actual petname and you get a "No Such Pet" message. [edit] That, and for the sake of cosmetic difference because displaying all of the pet info under the pet headshot might make it a bit cluttered if you plan to use the pet=PETNAME code for sorting your pets on your profile.
Either way, it's your call in the end! x) I'd be happy with just an updated pet=PETNAME code.
Showing all that info on the pet display can also be cluttered if you use them on a pet profile. I'm using them on my pet Paper Witch's profile instead of the pet friends part. I wouldn't mind having the name but not so much the rest of the info. I've been meaning to just create a link back image for my pet's profile but have been lazy/keep forgetting.
But yes, I'd love for them to link back that I'd take anything. I've seen a few times where a user used that code then I had to hunt down the pet.

Do you mind if I edit your first post? I can help remove things that were fixed, to take some of the load off of you. I won't touch it unless you're cool with it of course.
I think the disappearing first-post issue has to do with a bug in our filter. I am working on a solution.
These were fixed.
We're not opposed to this, but we don't really know where to put it. We don't want it to go on the News page because it would push down important links and the News page is already kinda cluttered. We think something involving the Forums would be cool since it's part of "interacting" but there isn't anywhere to put it on the Forums currently... So yeah, any suggestions here are welcome.

avatar spotlight - maybe at the feed page? or as a widget so only the users who wants it can use it?
We're getting rid of widgets though D:
