It's been a while and the item descriptions here still haven't been changed yet. Hope to see them changed soon.
As for "jip" I don't think it should be changed. If it were though "rip-off" or "joke" would suffice, I think.

I'm actually going to go against what seems to be the majority here, and say if gypsy is removed, jip should be too. It's just a shortened version of the slur, right?

is going to be changing these soon! She has them on her list of things to do, we didn't forget :)
Sorry! I didn't mean to make it seem like you'd both forgotten them. I'm glad they'll be changed soon.

I agree with and . "Jip" isn't a word. It's usage in the item description is a misspelling of "gyp," which is still considered an ethnic slur amongst the Romani peoples. Its current meaning of "rip off" stems from the stereotypes against the Romani as sneaking thieves.
The association between the slur and the group it's a slur toward is not recognized as heavily in the States, but in areas of Europe in particular, where there is still some pretty strong prejudices against the Romani, it continues to be used and intended as a harmful slur. Those links, btw, are all to stories from Europe in the past year which have included some gems, such as a French official muttering that "maybe Hitler didn't kill enough of them," Amnesty International calling on the EU to take action to end discrimination against the Romani, a French interior minister telling Romani to go back to Romania/Bulgaria, and a Hungarian party gaining traction by promising to fight "gypsy crime." And that's just from the articles. Read the comments and you'll see people saying they are from any number of countries and making similarly hateful comments. I don't think it's "a stretch" to say that the misspelled word "jip" has negative connotations, even when none of the other words in the sentence are directly related to the Romani.
If the site is going to recognize "gypsy" as something requiring changes, then it only makes sense to get rid of the misspelled version of the derivative word. Especially when there are so many alternatives that don't have negative connotations tied to them.
I'm almost feeling like I can't use any form of the word now, lest I be in the wrong. Since it all means the same as that word. does that mean: No thief, no steal, no swindle, no bamboozle, no rip-off, and no hustle. Or are those terms perfectly fine still? I don't want to step on anyone's toes. Maybe I'm just reading too far into things, I don't know.

Lol I don't feel like this word, jip/ped, is worth this amount of melodrama. I mean really, rip-off was one of the replacement suggestions wasn't it? It's not like the word, I dunno.... telephone is being removed from the site and we're being forced to say "technological machine used to instantaneously have verbal conversations with other human beings world wide".
That said, I've involuntarily learned more than I wanted to about the word "jip" today! Apparently, alongside a purposeful misspelling of the word gyp it's also a word meaning sheep (ironic, considering the Romani are rather unconventional, if anything meant sheep it should be chri-- I digress), and it apparently can also mean ejaculated semen?? ? What a sentence changer, am I right?
... No really, my learning lesson aside jip/ped should be removed as well since it literally gets it's meaning from gyp/sy. It's not like subeta allows fag (hey it could be a smoke reference) or negro (what it's spanish for the color black) unless it does which incase it should not, so gyp/jip should fall under that category of "technically we can, but that doesn't mean we should ".
Fixing these now (all of them)! Sorry, had a couple days off.
None of those are a derivative of gypsy, so I'm not sure what you're going on about
You don't have to apologise, it's good you had some time off ^^
Learning that the word is a slur has just had me thinking a lot. I guess because they all mean the same thing, to cheat and steal and stuff, I'm not sure if those are fine to use or not now. Even if they aren't coming from the slur directly. Like I said, I'm probably over thinking things and looking too far into it and if I am, I'm sorry. I guess they'd be okay to use, but I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable by using them is all I'm saying. I probably sound silly.

They aren't derivatives of slurs, or slurs themselves. You're definitely over thinking it lol
Alright, well I'm glad that's been cleared up for me then. Thank you.

Thank you for fixing these :)
I really do not see a point in changing the items. It is a name derived from the word Egyptian and tons of Romani organizations use it in their title. :|

Some does not mean all, and there's plenty of evidence that it's a slur. There's plenty of black people that use a slightly altered version of the N word, but it remains a slur, especially when said by someone that isn't black.
I guess I am just thrown off because one of my friend's ancestry is all Roma and her family has always found it derogatory to NOT call them gypsies and take great offense when anyone references them as anything else. So people taking offense to BEING called a gypsy is just new to me since I have not met others of Roma descent offline other than their huge family.

I've heard of some people reclaiming it and using it, but I've heard of more considering it a slur. So, unless told otherwise by someone of Roma descent, I find it a safer option to simply not use gypsy
