Fif/Fifi are french shortenings of the word effeminate, used in a pejorative way to designate gay males.

I totally understand wanting to have it changed and I think it's good that you're doing what you think need to be done. Try the urban dictionary - it comes up as a french slur.

I find that context and intention is so tricky, that it's usually just better to play on the safe side of it and not use something that might hurt and/or offend someone else. Better to be seen as one of those 'annoying PC people' than an intolerant asshole :P

I apologise for coming across as patronizing. When I added french/france to my search I found a few people referencing it as a slur but no major references to it, and before I knew what culture it came from I was finding literally nothing in reference to the word.

That being said, while I understand your way of dealing with this item is to leave it be, I also see a difference between your complaint and mine. This item is obviously completely ignorant of any homophobic stereotype and is blatantly meant to sound like a lisped version of the word "fifth". While it's unfortunate that it DOES spell out a slur, the Gypsy Outfit is BLATANTLY targeting stereotypical Romani culture and racist depictions of Romani people.

Yeah I'm kind of indifferent to the gypsy item, I do think the description could be changed if not the name, and I don't think Iltallo really needs "the Gypsy" on his page either, considering this is literally the first time I've ever heard him referred to as a gypsy.

On the first page you asked about shows with "gypsy" in the name, here's a few. I have never seen these shows but they were brought up with a quick google search.

• My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding (TLC)
• Gypsy Sisters (TLC)
• American Gypsies (National Geographic Channel)

All three look to be reality shows that likely have very little truth on the lives of gypsies. But just wanted to point out that here in America, this is what we get.

I personally don't think of gypsy itself as a slur word unless it is used in that context. A huge chunk of words though fit that description which is unfortunate. Personally I find gypsy a very pleasant sounding and looking word and would hate for it to be gone from Subeta. That said, I wouldn't mind if the items were changed to something like traveler or wanderer since that seems to be what they were going for.
