- what do you mean, would they be accepted in pet spotlight? They're encyclopedia entries, basic information on sizing and a little history of the pet. They're not characters, they're species in general - and we specifically intended not to weave any kind of involved 'story' here, as that's for the users to do. Pet spotlight is a completely different thing.
These articles are really starting points for your Subeta journey. There are many things within in world of Subeta that could affect your pet, and cause it to deviate from the article (from simple physical things such as training, to the experimentation in the Darkside, to the magics of Saherimos). Now there is something to deviate /from/ which I think is pretty exciting.
As to communication - it was the fact that we call them 'pets' that led us to the decision to ultimately keep their basic sentience non-speaking for the most part. I think this is something I'd like to look further into, along with the reason there are anthropomorphic NPCs over the site. (The idea of having a 'pet' vs. a 'companion' - at what point does the line change?) We have some ideas, behind the scene, which I'm sure will be making it onsite eventually. But for now, again, something to deviate from in your own stories!
- I love that idea of the breakdown on the left! It's not possible for me to edit that in right now, but I'll likely be sitting down with Keith/Amber over the next week and making a few little changes to the 'pedia based on feedback :)
As to why only 10 articles went out, instead of waiting for everything to be complete first: well, for one, because it's the 10th anniversary! 10 was a good round number to start with, and we've been working on these particular articles for a while. Subeta has tried in the past to bring projects like this to completion (that is, have EVERY pet done) before release, and we've come across a multitude of problems (losing staff members, other priorities taking over which slowed the project down, writing styles changing, etc.) Not to mention, adding in that many articles at once would have been a large task! And much more difficult to change had their been immediate unhappy feedback. It's much simpler for us to add to the Subetapedia now, and by starting with only a limited amount of articles we can work in feedback for future ones. (Like the sidebar information) It's /there/ now, and a thing I am excited to really build on now that we can.
So many things to write about :D
- oh, well yes. Exclamation marks aren't errors, they're just personal preference, and we wouldn't deny for them. The one error I've seen pointed out would not stop a pet from getting into the spotlight, as we can generally see that it's a small error that is easily corrected and doesn't really hurt the story for us. If a spotlight entry was nothing BUT spelling mistakes and grammatical errors and they completely took away from the story, then yes we'd likely deny :)
- we don't see ourselves quite in the same vein (or league!) as published encyclopaedias, which I imagine are worked on and edited by a great number of people! We're developing our own style, and adapting as we go, as we see fit, and as user feedback comes in :) We were pretty excited when writing these articles, and that has apparently manifested in more exclamation points than usual!
(Although for real here, you want our encyclopaedia to resemble the punishment you got as a kid?! I hope you are at least now bursting with facts after that!)
