This was the original intention of the cloud system, however because of the database system we're using (clustrix) we have to give very specific instructions / permissions to each of our servers when they come up. A new version of the database was released recently that permitted a little more broad permissions which allow us to do this. We could have technically always done this on the web server end, but would have still had to log into each of the database servers (3) and make the nodes recognize a supported web server.
Now that can be done automatically and removed the last piece of the puzzle :)
And to your last question: this still isn't a thing that most sites do. DevOps (what this is) software like SaltStack, Chef, etc, have just started to come into prominence in the last two years, which essentially are server automation software. Technology changes daily. Neopets and most other sites still run on physical hardware they have access to. :)

"Now, all of that is automated. When there are very few users online, it drops down to 1 server, when there are a lot of users online it goes up to 8 servers. If we're in an event season we can change the min/max and it'll keep the servers within those limits. When it spins up a server it automatically adds itself to the database server and our site updating script is now "smart" and knows what servers are on the load balancer. We don't need to log into them at all anymore!"
Um, is this the reason why so many pages are just blank minus the subeta logo? There's not enough people on the site atm thus no pages or they take FOREVER to load? Hmm. might have been the net browser (tried the page with both firefox and explorer = blank screen, just tested it with chrome on phone and seems to be working). But it could still be an issue for some?

I don't now if this server stuff has anything to do with this or not, but I just vended 75 items with nary a lag, hiccup, pause or complete stop. :) Woohoo!
It's been a long time since I could vend fairly quickly and with no glitches.

Love the idea, but so far today, there's been a load of (intermittent) lag, and I had to refresh about 5 times to even get to the forums, past the Calvin Blackmoon internal error page (only 604 people online) :(

Seconding what Paddy said, ever since the celebration started last night I've seen Calvin Blackmoon quite a bit. And pages are hanging sometimes that require hard refreshes to get anywhere.

I've been getting pages hanging and lag a lot today too.

Calvin Blackmoon was there for quite a while in the early morning (3am or thereabouts), and it seemed to get a bit better, then lag really badly around 7am / 7:30am....
So far today I've had a couple of cloudflare error pages, but the site does seem to be running smoother :D

I just finished the last of these updates on the webservers tonightat around 1:30AM Subeta time!
Next up is the avatar servers which are already pretty fast :)
