I like the idea of pet likes (set up pretty much as HA likes). But I agree, no HST and no achievements attached to it.

I think a few of us are saying the idea is fine as long as it is like HA likes...no achievements and no HST :)

I'm adding in my support of this idea. I do agree if it was done like HA likes that would be nice, no achievements or anything else added. My fear if there were top scores or achievements how easy would it be to take advantage of friends just clicking like until their friend got achievements. And a top scores idea would suffer the same result.

Just a simple heart to click (or disable) to say you liked something about a pet (name, color matching, story, whatever) is very nice.

I love the idea of a like button for pets! There are pets I've seen around whose ideas I am absolutely in love with but aren't spotlight ready yet. I would absolute utilize this feature. I also feel like this would give people incentive to finish their pets if they are aiming for spotlight (I mean, personally, if a bunch of people liked my pet, I'd wanna show him off even more with a shiny little trophy) And for all the negative comments about this... does anyone cause a bitch fit about HA likes? The popularity aspect of that exists too, but people aren't going around like "Omg I want this disabled wahhh". I think pets deserve a like button as well, considering this is a PETsite.

But yes to: No achievements attached (because again, there is no achievement for HA likes) Only viewable by user Enable/disable for certain pets (kind of like the Nominate feature)

Yes, quite a few people don't like the idea of achievements. However, as it was one of the ideas suggested, I am still acknowledging that it was part of the suggestion.

I will love you forever if you trade me:

A lot of the spotlight rules are pretty subjective, and there are plenty of pets out there that are really creative, but don&;t meet the spotlight guidelines and would never get accepted.

Not everyone aims to win the spotlight, not everyone wants to follow those rules. A pet should be "finished" when the owner says it&;s finished, not when some arbitrary, subjective rules say it&;s finished. Just because a pet isn&;t finished yet, doesn&;t mean it&;s not good or doesn&;t deserve appreciation.

Aaaand then there&;s this rule: "Any pets that straddle the borderline of what is acceptable, e.g., pets of an extremely sexual nature or those with extremely graphic undertones, may be rejected." Those pets will never be accepted into the spotlight, but that doesn&;t mean that they aren&;t well-done or creative.

I was not for, but those are good arguments why it could be a good idear.

On my opinion some rules could be a little changed.

For example a story could be great about a homosexual pet. If the story is well thought and clear, it deserves indeed apprication.

A homosexual pet could win the spotlight as they have many many times before. Some examples: http://subeta.net/pets/Homosexual_922 http://subeta.net/pets/San+Francisco

I assume you consider homosexuality to fall under "extremely sexual nature" ? That can be said about heterosexuality too, and very well should be :) However there's absolutely nothing graphic about a story that has nothing to do with sex, and the pet happens to be homosexual. The rules meant "extremely sexual nature" by, oh idunno, having basically hardcore smut as the 'story', etc. I am 99% sure before this rule was thought up, a pet called Pornography won the spotlight. I remember being somewhat amused as the TC was filled with suggestive items. Everyone had a laugh but I think this pet was removed and any trace of it's winning has been removed as well, because I just cannot find the pet for the life of me. And I think this might have been before the rules about having to have an actual story was implemented too.

I don't really like this idea. It's more than likely going to end up being based on popularity, or who is more active on the forums/part of the larger pet cults.

[edit] Mind, if it was the same system as HA's then I suppose there's no harm done.

I forgot to post on this last night, if our pets could get likes in the same way we can get human avatar likes then I think this would be fine. Who cares if someone wants to give every single one of someone's pets likes because they are friends. No one else can see it but the person who owns the pet and it's not hurting anyone.

This is a pet site, so treat it like one. If a pet gets sent to someone else or the adoption center, then yes, I think the likes should reset.

There shouldn't be achievements involved though, I think that would cause more drama than to just add it without them.

I'm also all for this idea if it were like HA's as everyone's been saying. It would really help motivate me personally to get my pets spotlight ready. Some pets just aren't there yet and seeing that people do appreciate the pets I have put work into would be a thousand times more gratifying than getting a like on my avatar. The pets I work on aren't just for me to look at and be proud of, I want other people to see them and enjoy them to.

, Thank you for the links. I'll read them.

I'm still doupt if I'm for or not.

I could be for because there are indeed great pet's who'll never win the petspotlight.

I could be not for because some users aren't not at facebook, or something and has got less contacts to ping thair friends to vote thair pets.

Some friends don't join subeta or are neighter on facebook too and can't vote.

The result could be there are still pets who could be great, but have got less or no votes because not eaverybody has got the time to join facebook.

An other point could be that many users unfluence each other and you get all the time the same winner. Then you get a plenty of darkhorses, who are also great, but still unknown.

Edit: , Read both. Very great. Respect for and who have made those story's.

I totally agree with . I like the idea if it is kept anon and if only the owner of the pet can see how many likes it has. That way this doesn't get turned into a popularity contest or anything like that. I personally wouldn't want to disable the feature, but it is pretty clear that a lot of people aren't a fan of the idea and would like an option to turn it off, so I think that is something important that should be included if this idea were to be implemented.

I'm definitely for a pet likes feature. Maybe not with achievements or anything (because, yes, some people are either too competitive or not mature enough to handle that), but if it were structured like the HA likes, then that would definitely work. After all, there are a lot of users who work hard on their pets just for the heck of it, and don't care about the spotlight or its rules one wit. A lot of those users have pets with profiles which would be considered "underdone" by the spotlight's standards, but they have written wonderful stories, or gathered an impressive treasure trove, or made a really nice overlay. Those users deserve to click onto their Pets menu every once in a blue moon and see a like or two, even if they never get a spotlight win.

Besides, this is still a virtual pet site, and any new feature which brings more attention to pets and the users who choose to focus on them is a good thing.

I'm in total support for this if, as others have said, there are no achievements and they work in a similar way to HA likes. I think it would be a cute, nice way to show someone you like their pet without full out messaging them about it and it would also probably be a nice little incentive for people to keep working on pets/pet pages that are a wip.
