I was bored so I made one of my own. I was skeptical at first, but after looking at the page more closely I realized the table with search results is already really wide, so there's no reason the form can't be wider to match it.

Of course, it's entirely possible that this is already planned for the mythical Recode.

Edit: I just realized the search results were only wide because my browser was. This would probably be really cramped if it was smaller, so I'm back to being skeptical.

[quote=] That looks really nice! It gets rid of the super long drop down menu that doesn't have to be super long AND moves the button out of the way of the suggested search list. Guess we can only wait to see if the owners/site coders want to use something like this.

Yes, I know it's not pressing, I said it wasn't. This will probably be addressed in the site recode if staff is unhappy about it.

Is there any real reason you&;re opposed to this, or are you just refusing change because you personally are not effected by it?
Please don't take it personally if I question your idea. This is an open forum after all. I'm still very amenable to further support from other users.

I know you said it's not pressing. You also made it sound like as if it would take hours and hours away from whatever else they're doing.

Well, I'm showing that I'm unhappy about it so something will get done. It may not be an issue for veterans of the site. It's still an annoying for some people. I don't know how many users actually come on the forum, but it seems like most of them have been here for quite some time. They know how to work the search shops better. Newer people may be having this issue, too. We won't know if they don't post. They probably won't post here.

I'm sorry that I refuse to take workarounds, but something like this shouldn't have to be worked around. The components should just work without getting in the way of each other. I've offered an easy solution. Doesn't mean anyone will take it, of course. But I'm just saying that out of the 1000 people that use this site every day, CloverTea and I can't be the only ones who find it annoying.

I'm not really that offended, but I am majorly confused that you will admit that there's a flaw and won't ask for change. It seems like your stance is "If they want to do it, they'll do it." But we need to at least tell them that there's a problem. I'm not going to be passive on this, and I'll keep suggesting this be changed until an official yes or no has been made.

If the only argument against moving the button to the right is that it's easy to work around and would take less than 15 minutes of coding time to fix ... then just do it and get it done?

While I agree it's not a big deal, I'm never against making anything more user-friendly. It hasn't happened to me frequently enough for me to be annoyed by it, since I usually get my search in before auto-complete kicks in. But yeah, I wouldn't mind this fix. =)

You're coming across as overly defensive, and it feels like you're trying to start a fight with Reine. You've both expressed your opinions, so there's no need to argue -- that doesn't help anything. Your thread is already calling attention to this issue, and that isn't negated by the fact that someone disagrees.

On another note:

Playing devil's advocate here, but there are a lot of little problems like this around the site, and they really add up. It may take 15 minutes to fix this, but it also takes 15 minutes to fix each of the other 2000 minor problems around the site. I think at this point the staff is just fixing the larger problems that truly impact the usability of the site, and directing the rest of their effort toward working on the Recode. I know it kind of sucks to hear this, but I'm sure it'll be fixed eventually.

I really wish they would fix the shop search. The auto-complete issue is a massive pain in the ass and there's absolutely no reason it should function as it does outside of poor design choices. Typing in a word and then pressing 'enter' should not change what you typed into something else. I don't personally mind where the Search button is because I never use it, but I can see how it would compound an already frustrating-to-use feature to have the drop down menu constantly getting in the way.

I may be coming across as overly defensive, but I do want good reasons as to not do this fix.

You either say "Yes, I agree to having this changed", or "No, I don't agree to having this changed."

To me, "Yes, it's a problem, but we shouldn't change it" is not an answer. I don't really care how long it takes until it's fixed. I want to know whether people agree something should be done in the near or far future. I keep seeing "No, this shouldn't be fixed even though it's a problem, use a workaround."

You can disable the autocomplete by putting this in your custom CSS:

.autocomplete {display:none;}

TLDR; I'm a jerk and I'm sorry for that. Here's me re-saying arguments I've already mentioned before, but in one post.

I apologize for coming off like I did earlier in the thread. I just want to say that I'm really sorry that I came off the way I did, and I didn't mean for it to look so nasty. Maybe I read it in a different tone while I wrote it?

I wanted to get some responses (from the people saying to not implement it) that seemed more acceptable than the ones that were provided.I realize how I looked during that. So, I will try to explain more why I don't think that those should be reasons to not implement the idea, but looking more calm about it.

Before I start, I noticed that I used a lot of "Do it now" arguments. I want to state that that is not my stance on this at all. Yes, while getting it done sooner would be nice, I'd be happy if an admin or someone locked the thread and said something to the effect of "Thank you for suggesting this. It's now on our list of things to do" (or a deny message, whatever they want to do). If there is truly 2000 small things on the site they want to fix up first, I'm fine with that. I'd just like to know whether they think this is something to fix or not.

I remember the argument that fixing this would take away from fixing more important things. Well, yes. That's called time management. You take time out of things to do other things. Like I've mentioned earlier in this post, I'd be happy knowing that it's on their list of things to do.

When I saw that a few people disagreed that something shouldn't be done because it took away time from other things, I thought that it was really silly that someone would just deny any change at any point in time because there were other things to be done. I think this is when I started looking cranky, and I apologize for that.

I see a lot of suggestions for workarounds. While I appreciate the help, that's not the point of the thread. Thank you for suggesting workarounds to the problem, but I want to know whether or not you think that this should be fixed in the future and why. Offering workarounds just tells me that maybe you guys have or had the same problem. If so, say something.

I'll end apologizing again for how I looked in this thread. Sometimes I get passionate over stupid things. I especially want to apologize to Reine and Speiro for this, I feel like I more directed at them because they took the time to respond to my posts.
